New Sod Plan and Checklist

Dates are check-in windows, not guaranteed readiness. Cold or dormant sod may take much longer. Follow the actual grass, soil, weather and installer plan.

Before delivery

Record grass species, cultivar and installation date. Confirm soil test and any lime/nutrient recommendations. Resolve drainage, grade and old-turf removal. Confirm area, cutting allowance, delivery and access. Test irrigation coverage, hoses and water supply. Arrange a daily caretaker and backup contact.

Installation day

Inspect material and document any concerns. Confirm moist prepared soil and close-fitting staggered seams. Establish soil contact and water completed sections promptly. Check moisture beneath several pieces, including edges. Record installer instructions, products and warranty terms.

Days 1–7: moisture and protection

Check morning and midday; adjust for heat, wind and rain. Keep the sod/interface moist without puddles or runoff. Keep heavy traffic, pets and play off the lawn. Address drying edges or persistent saturation promptly.

Days 8–14: anchoring checks

Gently test representative edges for resistance. Only extend watering intervals as rooting allows. If still loose, reassess moisture/contact and consult the installer.

Days 15–30 and beyond: transition when ready

Mow only when anchored, firm, and tall enough. Resume use gradually; set the correct mowing height. Transition to the established species plan when roots allow. Check the nutrient plan before applying more fertilizer.
